When They Say Universal Health Care, We Don’t Mean It

25 04 2008

The Hill (Found via Rochester Turning) reports today:

Congressional Democrats are backing away from healthcare reform promises made by their two presidential candidates, saying that even if their party controls the White House and Congress, sweeping change will be difficult…Sen. Charles Schumer (N.Y.), a member of Senate Democratic leadership and a key Hillary Clinton ally who also sits on the Finance Committee, said he is ‘not sure we have the big plan on healthcare.’…’Healthcare I feel strongly about, but I am not sure that we’re ready for a major national healthcare plan,’ Schumer said.

Also from the article

“We all know there is not enough money to do all this stuff,” said Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), a Finance Committee member and an Obama supporter, referring to the presidential candidates’ healthcare plans. “What they are doing is … laying out their ambitions.”

I have to admit that Universal Health Care is one of the biggest areas I disagree with Democrats on. I think it would be a massive waste of money and energy that would help sink our economy and the level of care, which is terrible because the level of care we have now is pretty bad. One of my chief reasons for not supporting such a plan is that no one can account for the billions of dollars spent by corporations in R&D that makes the United States one of the few leaders in medical technology development.

Not to mention the fact that the numbers don’t add up and there is no way to create a system equivalent to Germany or Canada with a population of 300+ Million.

So I am glad the Democrats are backing far away from this.
