Rich Liberals Should Start Car Companies
2 05 2008One of the things I continually come back to whenever I hear a rich celebrity talk about the environment is, “why doesn’t everyone in Hollywood contribute a couple million dollars and start their own electric car company?” The idea hit me pretty hard after watching the documentary, Who Killed the Electric Car where celebrities whined that they had their dream but it was taken away..
Now think about it for a moment. You take Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, Rosie O’Donnell, Steve Jobs, Al Gore, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Larry David, Sheryl Crow, the cast of The Simpsons and the rest and have each one contribute a couple million dollars. Before you know it you are talking a couple hundred million to throw into an initial investment.
They make an electric car.
Now the best part is, they all have rich friends who make a lot of money, not just Hollywood people but investment bankers and computer types who all want to be cool and hip and part of the Oceans 11 scene. They each buy one or two of these things for way more than it costs to basically subsidize the next round. The manufacturing costs suddenly drop and in a couple years you create an entirely affordable car that can be shipped to the masses.
You throw that car into every movie, TV show, drop the name in songs and the buzz is that everyone must own the thing, it becomes a status symbol. The best part is, the initial investment by all the rich liberals would pay off untold dividends from the companies success and would force the other automakers into moving toward the future and adopting completely electric, pollution free autos themselves. California would lead the way for Detroit and the rest of the nation.
This would actually be a solution to the problem of global climate change that would make economic sense. The initial investment needs to be made and as with the Prius the early adopters would have to pay a little moreto make things affordable for the average person. So basically Puffy would have to forgo one night of partying on his yacht and instead buy a couple of electric cars. George Clooney would have to forgo a private jet ride and buy a couple electric cars. John Edwards would have to give up a couple haircuts too but in the end they could make the Earth greener and best of all could leave the rest of us alone for awhile while they build an empire.
I am just saying, this would probably be a solution that benefits everyone rather than just waiting around for this problem to resolve itself. No need for taxes, no need for government intervention, just some enterprising people who can put their money to good use.
