Our Tax Dollars Going to Frontier Field

4 05 2008

The D&C is reporting today that despite a promise nearly ten years ago, Monroe County tax payers are subsidizing the debt for building Frontier Field at a cost of over $1 Million a year, an estimated $2.7 Million in 2008, in what could build to a total cost of $42 Million when the tab is finally paid off in 2024. Let me just ask, wtf?

Personally I am typically a firm believer that governments subsidizing sports stadiums in general is a bad idea. Add to it the fact that Monroe makes no revenue from the stadium and has no say in its operations and you have a colossal waste of money. Maggie brooks is looking for suggestions on how to pay off that $29 Million budget shortfall? I think we have $2.7 Million we can save right there.

Seriously, if we the taxpayers never agreed to this nonsense I say we pull the plug and let Frontier Field pay its own debt.
